Elizabeth Filipe: News ReporterPublished: Sat, 09 Jan 2010 08:42:00 -0500 Elizabeth Mary Filipe is a 15 year old sophomore whose life, family, and talents are exciting and extraordinary. On Mother's Day, May 8, 1994, she came into this world as a special surprise for her parents who weren't expecting her. Throughout her mom's pregnancy, Elizabeth's heartbeat was mistaken as an echo of Aaron's - her twin brother. Including herself, Elizabeth's family consists of five children. She has two older brothers, one of whom recently got married, and the other who is currently engaged. She also has an older sister who has a knack for babysitting, drawing, and making unique flowers out of ribbon. And last but definitely not least is her twin brother, Aaron, who “is a track star and [her] hero.” Completing her big family is her mom and her dad. Her father is a bus driver for special needs children. When describing her father's job she told me about an incident he went through when he went to pick up a girl, and she “came racing out of her house with a gun in her hand and her mother chasing behind her.” This is one of the many reasons why she considers her dad to be a “brave guy.” Elizabeth's talents are as numerous as the members in her family. Some of her favorite things to do are to sing, dance, act, write, hike, cook, spend time with her family and pick blueberries. Once, she gathered 25 pounds of them! That is definitely a bushel of talents, not to mention blueberries. On top of all these talents and activities, Elizabeth manages to maintain her grades and keep up with her sole Potter's class, Advanced Composition which she was able to enroll in without taking any of the prerequisite classes! Now, she is the on the Cracked Pot staff as a global news reporter which she enjoys because she has always wanted to write about the events happening in the world around her. She obviously has a skill for writing and said that she loves words, but despite all of this, Elizabeth aspires to one day becoming a medical missionary. She is already planning for her future career and is determined to attend the medical program at Brown University, an Ivy League college in Providence, Rhode Island. As she says, “I like to shoot very high with my goals.” She knows that it will be a challenge, especially with her strengths lying in English, but with her focus, drive, and passion she is sure to meet her goals and overcome any obstacles.
