Determinig the Fashion TrendsPublished: Fri, 31 Oct 2008 22:58:00 -0400 Where do trends come from? As humans we enjoy imitating what we see. Thus, the entertainment industry heavily influences the fashion industry. The two industries play off of each other in an intertwined manner to create culture. Both industries rely on creativity, each other, and the public.
Back in the 80s, movie producers began making films about dancers - dancing became extremely popular. Both industries jumped on this as more and more films were about dancing and dancers and active wear became trendy. The fashion industry was able to use this to create new designs for clothing and apparel. The comeback of the 50s during the 80s also benefited the entertainment and fashion industries. Fashion designers look to those previous ideas for new forms of the same concept while entertainment used the public interest in the era to create more and more shows and films set during that time. The same thing is happening now with the 80s comeback in fashion, though the entertainment industry has gotten involved in a new way: the 80s sound.
New twists on 80s clothing have become increasingly more fashionable. At the same time the sounds of 80s music have penetrated into todays music industry, ultimately recreating a new 80s culture. Of course we have added our own culture to the retro stuff. A new generation comes with new thoughts and ideas, though each generation is so very similar.
Along with comebacks and hobbies, both industries play off of icons and interests of the people. Pirates sparked the interest of people after the film Pirates of the Caribbean came out. Buccaneer apparel, games, books, and movies are all very popular at this time. Fashion wise, medallions were a huge hit as was anything with Jolly Roger skull and crossbones.
Celebrities also have an enormous role in both fashion and entertainment. The sounds, colors, and characters they produce, wear, and play will affect the industries directly. If the public likes the image, both industries will create more, more, and more; if not, then its back to the drawing board (as the old cliché states).
Both of the industries play off of each other and the public to create a modern culture. Culture is determined by trends, issues, and people. And each of those is intertwined. Entire studies are based upon what people like and want and why? The real question might be what is a trend anyway?
