TV Shows

This season has quite a few of returning shows, a number of reality shows, and some new ones as well. There are some good TV shows, and some not so good ones. But what is worth watching and when should we just ‘take a break’? Television hosts a wide variety of channels and programs.

Science-fiction, police drama “Life on Mars” premiered on ABC this fall and follows the story of Detective Sam Tyler (Jason O’Mara). While trying to catch a criminal, Det. Sam Tyler is hit by a car and the collision sends him back to 1973. Sam struggles with working in the police force in the 70s in the 125th all while trying to get “back home” to 2008. In 2008 Sam was in love with Maya Daniels (Lisa Bonet) but in 1973 Annie paves the way for Maya to become a cop. Sam wrestles with his longing to be back with Maya in 2008 and his relationship “now” in 1973. He begins to realize that things in 2008 and 1973 are not that far apart. “Life on Mars” also stars Harvey Keitel, Michael Imperioli, Gretchen Mol, and Jonathan Murphey. The show has decreased in good ratings over the past couple of weeks and is not considered a family friendly show.

Superman drama “Smallville” returns to CW for its eighth season. “[T]his modern retelling of the Superman legend and its classic characters continues to blend realism, action and emotional depth to reveal a new interpretation of the enduring mythology,” says CWTV. In this season Clark Kent (Tom Welling) comes “closer than ever to embracing his calling as the iconic superhero he is destined to become.” He continues to fight more “bad guys” and also applies for a job at the Daily Planet by request of Lois (Erica Durance). The two are forced to work together and Lois becomes one of Clark’s greatest obstacles. Anyone who loves action shows and superheroes will clearly enjoy this TV show.

Yet another reality and game show airs on ABC, “Opportunity Knocks.” Game show hosts show up at the door of an unsuspecting, average family’s house. They set up an entire show in the neighborhood and the family competes for money as they answer questions about their family members. One of the most compelling factors of the show is “How do they know everything about these people?” In short the TV program is just another mindless excuse of entertainment. While unoriginal and un-compelling, this show comes on at 8/7c.

If you loved “The Suite Life of Zack and Cody” chances are you have already immersed yourself in the brand-new Disney Channel teen sit-com “The Suite Life on Deck,” a spin-off from the original series. Aboard a cruise ship Zack (Dylan Sprouse) and Cody (Cole Sprouse) get into just as much trouble as they did mischief back at the Tipton Inn run by Mr. Moseby (Phill Lewis), who also stars on the show. The cruise ship is owned by the Tipton family and naturally London Tipton is aboard the luxurious ship. The show also invites a new face on the set: Debby Ryan as Bailey Pickett. Really, the only difference between the original show and the spin-off is that instead of a hotel, the setting is a cruise ship. Both are far-fetched from reality but make an interesting thought for young teens.
