Student Accepted to Biola University on Art Scholarship

Published: Mon, 02 Jun 2008 22:17:00 -0400

Student Marielle McGee recently received an art scholarship to attend Biola University, where she was accepted into the Torrey Honors Institute. She received the scholarship after submitting a few of her photographs taken as a part of the Potter's School photography class. Marielle currently serves in Turkey within a working Christian family.

Marielle’s photography teacher, Mrs. Brianna Tittel, knew of Marielle’s interest in Biola but was unaware that she had applied.  Mrs. Tittel says Marielle is a gifted photographer with a strong eye for seeing the relationships in a scene. “Her photos are unique to her own style, which has an air of nostalgia and curiosity.  Marielle senses the creative potential of a scene and works with what she knows to tell the story as she sees it.”  When asked if she thought Marielle could make it as a professional photographer, Mrs. Tittel said, “Absolutely!  She definitely has the eye for it, which is important.  Even more though, she has the passion for it, which is what is truly critical in making a living as an artist.”

When Marielle applied to Biola and selected art as her major, Biola sent her the scholarship application, which required ten examples of her work: five anatomy studies and five that illustrated bible verses. Marielle's acceptance into the Torrey Honor Institute requires her to read several books that cover general education subjects and then discuss them with a peer group of students.  Acceptance criteria included samples of her writing and her SAT score.  A three-year high school program she took at Torrey High School also helped her prepare for acceptance into the honor institute.

Marielle plans on pursuing a degree in interdisciplinary arts while considering a career in photojournalism. Mrs. Tittel echoes what her work already proclaims; Marielle has a gift for art, whether she makes a career of selling it, or sharing her gift with others through teaching.  Although right now she is unsure of her exact direction in this field, she is waiting on the Lord for guidance.  Good luck, Marielle, and congratulations.
