Student Spotlight - Christopher ReevesPublished: Thu, 31 Jan 2008 23:59:00 -0500 Christopher Reeves was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, on February 9th, 1991. He has moved four times since Indiana, but his family (excepting his dad, who lives in Salt Lake City, Utah) has currently settled down in Bailey, Colorado. His family consists of his dad, Steve; his mom, Madeline; his sister, Monica; his nephew, Nick; and his step-dad, Eric. He describes his family in the following way:
Well, my sister is 28, and she recently moved here from Utah. She is pretty much the opposite of my personality, but we get along quite well. My nephew, 7 years old, is just like me in many ways, and some say even looks like me. My mom and I have a very similar personality on how we view things. We try to base everything off of logic. My step-Dad is more like my sister, he likes the sports I do, and activities, but he is a spontaneous person. My Dad is like me in that we like the same sort of humor and such. But we don't really share similar personalities. He's not very outgoing, and he is not a Christian. Neither is my sister.
Christopher is currently in 11th grade. He went to public school until seventh grade, and has been home-schooled ever since. When asked about the differences between public school and home-school, he said, I disliked public school overall. I find home-schooling has benefited and taught me a lot better then public school ever could, especially in math. I do believe that public school is a very bad placedrugs, bullies, and over a year ago, shootings at the high-school I would have been in.
He has been on TPS for two years. I love it, he says. I have liked all my teachers, and their methods for teaching the courses, which I believe has helped me a lot. This year, he is taking Geometry with Mrs. Crosby and Computer Programming II with Mr. Gray. Overall, he says, he likes both classes, though Geometry can at times be a bit overwhelming, with projects and tons of work.
Christopher enjoys basketball, archery, fishing, gaming (MMORPGs are his favorite), reading, computer programming, playing the keyboard, and anything to do with Tolkien or Lord of the Rings. When asked to name one of his absolute favorite activities, he said, Well, I'll admit it...I'm addicted to gaming. I have some leadership roles online in a couple MMORPGs I play, and I enjoy it a lot. Ever since becoming addicted to MMORPGs, I've always wanted to create my own with everything I wanted that's missing from the ones I play. That's why I picked up programming. My dream is to one day create that. Concerning reading, he remarked that after reading Tolkien its been hard to find books he would like. When asked to describe himself briefly, he said:
When I make friends, I can be very talkative. I'm generally not very outgoing towards people I don't already know. I prefer to stay home rather then be out all the time. When I debate or argue, I try to view the arguments through logic rather then feelings or opinions though opinions always play a part in anyone. I tend to be blunt about things when talking about sensitive issues with people. I'm the type of person to say things like they are. I'm also very sarcastic at times. Ticks my sister off a lot.
The most important experiences in his life so far have been witnessing to others, especially his sister and dad. Says Christopher, It will be the best day of my life if either turns to the Lord. Also, finally getting his drivers license was a big deal to him. That probably sounds dumb though, he remarked. Concerning five people who have influenced him most, he said, My step-dad. He has been probably the most important person in bringing me up in the Lord. My grandparents have taught me well in terms of how I view parts of life as a whole. My mom has been a very good educator to me, and I believe has taught me well. And I think very much like my mom does, and I'm sure she's played a part in that. And my dad and step-dad have just taught me how to have fun in life. They say as I get older I'm getting more serious.
When asked to define the most meaningful moment of his life, Christopher originally said that he would need time to reply to such a difficult question. Later, he replied via email with the following response:
My most meaningful experience was probably a car accident my mom and I got in when we were newly Christians. By rights it should have killed both of us. We were in a small little Ford Escort car, and this other guy was in a big honkin' snowplow (the biggest kind there are). He hit the side of our car, the blade crushed part of it, we got flipped in front, and he just pushed us a while before he even saw us and stopped. Its amazing it didn't just drive right over our car. It really made me feel like God was really watching over us, and as such really strengthened my faith early on, when I was still new to the Christian faith. That was probably my biggest faith builder. I truly believed in God after that.
Currently, Christopher is reading 1 John, primarily chapters 1 through 3. Its a very good study, he says, John spares no expense in saying how bad sin is, and the Christian living in sin. Before that, I read John, in preparation for witnessing to some family. When asked whether he had been preparing for his first time witnessing, he said, No. I've witnessed to my dad a lot, so it was not the first time, but I tried it again, better prepared. He was very closed to it, and said I must be attacking what he believes as do all fanatical Christians in his words. So I told him he was focused on the wrong Christians.
Christophers favorite Bible verse is Hebrews 13:5, because like any Christian, Ive made mistakes, and bad choices in life, and I find it comforting to know God is still with us, and will forgive us, if we repent. Its very comforting to know he will never forsake us.
