Potters School Junior Bryan Adrian of Pine, Colorado recently began work towards his Eagle Scout Project. Bryan has already completed the ranks of Scout, Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class, and Star. Currently with the rank of Life, Bryan has learned first-aid and crucial life-saving skills and has begun the required year-and-a-half of leadership within his troop, Troop 400, in Conifer, Colorado.
He got started in the boy scouts in 2001 at the age of ten after his parents and older brother Matthew, also a scout, encouraged him to join. To Bryan, the rank of Eagle means a lot. "It means that I can go out into the adult world and know how to lead and survive as a self sufficient unit," he says. "To be an Eagle Scout is to believe in a set of higher morals set by the Scouting organization as well as selfless leadership and service to others." Scouting has taught him leadership and perseverance. "As an Eagle I have to help and encourage younger scouts to work hard and to not quit when the road gets rough," he explains. "I am now the role model for the next generation of scouts." Being a scout also changed his way of viewing nature and opened his eyes to the natural beauty of Colorado.
Being an Eagle will help Bryan tremendously in the college-application process as well as in finding a job. "Employers and college admission personnel see Eagle Scout on my resume and they automatically think, This kid has a lot of leadership under his belt," Bryan says. "Also, they know that I can complete a task on my own. I did all of the requirements without my parents' help. I only received help from the Scout leaders, my friends, and my brother."
Bryan began studying at the The Potters School four years ago. "I thought the whole internet school thing was kind of weird at first," he says, "but the next year I liked it more." He has taken classes from many teachers, including Mr. Gray, Mrs. Troxell, Mrs. Gaines, Mr. Madison, Mrs. Koemmpel, and Mr. Futoran. "The greatest thing about The Potter's School," he says, "is that it is at home and you can go to class in your PJs." Along with Scouting, Bryan also enjoys ski races on the weekends and building stuff. He plans on studying engineering or physics in college.
