Music AppreciationPublished: Fri, 30 Nov 2007 23:57:00 -0500 Why does one need to understand music? Why cant one just listen and enjoy it? Mrs. Spotts, a musical connoisseur, answers this question and many more in her music appreciation class.
Beginning with basic musical elements such as correct descriptive terms and a plethora of instruments, Mrs. Spotts quickly immerses her students in the world of music. Progressing to an examination of ensembles and performance etiquette, she prepares them to thoroughly enjoy any concert experience. She informs them not only of the correct identification of an ensemble but also what each instrument looks and sounds like. However, she does not neglect to cover the basic musical forms, which are important aspects in being able to thoroughly listen to music. In addition, Mrs. Spotts covers the important factor of vocals; the class briefly discusses and analyzes music performed by the human voice.
This class also includes an overview of musical history. Mrs. Spotts' students study the background of vocal and instrumental music. Due to advances in technology, one can see music evolve from sacred to secular. Those taking this class learn about this and many other changes that have occurred in the world of music. Her class discusses many important composers, showing their influence in pre-Baroque music. While studying the Baroque period, students learn about one of the most important composers ever: Bach. They learn his life story while listening to his music. This method of study continues throughout the year as students cover both historical and modern music.
While it is only the second quarter of school, this class has already covered so much. These eager music students thoroughly anticipate more in-depth discussion of composers and much future enjoyment of music.
