Scene 5

(The lights come on Aida and Rose sitting together in the forest, picking wildflowers.)

Rose- Aida, your hair looks perfect with this flower. Hold still; let me put them in your hair!

Aida- Rose, you know, I was thinking about what you said. You know, about Jesus and the rose?

Rose- I hoped you would, Aida!

Aida- Well, I was thinking about it, and maybe you were right. I understand it now. Maybe I should try forgiveness, try to look through the thorns, like you said.

Rose- Oh, Aida, I’m so happy-

Aida- Well, I haven’t made a decision yet, but I’m thinking more about it.

Rose- Oh, that’s wonderful. Oh, my, look at the sun! It’s so low, which means it’s probably time for Esther’s birthday. Come on. Last home is going to be a rotten -- a rotten-

Aida- A what?

Rose- A rotten…thing!

Aida- All right! Hey, wait for me!

(Lights go out on Aida and Rose and come back up on the children celebrating a birthday with food and presents).

Aida- You know, Rose, I feel like I’m so close to you- like I’ve known you all my life. How’d that happen?

Rose- Oh, Aida, we’re made to love each other. We have the other children in the cave, but you know, the Lord put us here at the right time. I mean, you’re the perfect friend for me, and I’m the perfect friend for you!

Aida- Rose?

Rose- Yeah?

Aida- Well, I’ve had a long talk with God in my mind about what you said. You know the love and joy you talked about? Well, I want to be able to love and forgive like you, and I want to feel that joy, and I wondered-

Dayla- So, as I have told him many a time, he must prepare himself for the world’s end. I always am right!

Esther- Oh, well, all right. But you really should read this book I found on the subject of caves. It’s quite interesting and I think-

Dayla- That’s nice. As I was saying, each day the earth begins to crumble more and more, and I-

Simeon- Um, Esther?

Esther- Yes, Simeon?

Simeon- I was wondering -- well, if you could -- do you -- would you care to dance, birthday girl?

Esther- Well, I’d love that! But wait -- we don’t have music to dance to!

Simeon- We don’t need music!

Dayla- Well, I- (sits down next to Rose, pouting).

Aida- Wait. How about you Rose, do you want to dance?

Rose- I’m fine sitting down for now. Besides, I don’t feel too well.

Aida- Rose, are you all right? You look -- pale.

Rose- Oh, I’m…I’m all right. I think I’ve been working too much today.

Aida- Rose, you’re so pale! I think you’re very sick. You haven’t been yourself lately. Are you sure you’re all right? Are you sure, Rose? Shouldn’t you do something about it- besides praying all the time?

Rose- There’s nothing I can do! My life is in God’s hands. I trust Him completely. Besides, this is like the Rose I told you about. This is one of those thorns, trying to prick me. But God’s love has an abundance of petals! So I don’t need to worry. God’s looking after me.

Aida- But Rose, I-

Rose- I’ll be in my room, all right? I’ll just rest a little. Bring me some flowers when you come back, all right- (passes out and falls to floor).

Aida- Rose? Rose! Everyone, she’s fainted, help me pick her up! Quickly!

(All the children rush over to Aida’s side and help her with Rose. Lights go out and scene ends.)
