Sports Spotlight: Beyond Basketball

Published: Thu, 01 Jun 2006 08:52:14 -0400

Rebecca MacGilvary, a freshman, first year Potter’s School student, and homeschooler for eight years, resides in Auburn, New Hampshire. Rebecca started playing basketball in 1st grade. As she described it, “I absolutely loved the sport and begged parents to let me continue to play. I enjoyed the competition.”

On her team Rebecca plays in the position of forward, explaining that her ability to grab rebounds and block shots makes her well-suited for that role, “My coach knows that I can grab rebounds and block [shots].” Concerning her offensive abilities, she explained, “I have a mean jump shot and do well shooting in the 3-point range.”

Last year Rebecca’s team won the championship game which it participated in. However, this year, although they came close to playing in the championship game, they fell just short, partially due to a slew of injuries to some of the players. Rebecca said, “As a team we have shown great sportsmanship and have been humble when we lose.”

Rebecca looks up to women’s basketball star Lisa Leslie, a center for the Los Angeles Sparks and Christian. Rebecca explained, “She is a very strong person who learned how to make the best of what she had… she was determined and a fabulous example of a ‘good’ person.”

Rebecca also observed that God has been working on her team as well, saying, “With God’s help I have been able to witness to my teammates and teach them about Him. It’s absolutely amazing at what God can do. I feel I was put on this team for a reason and I cannot wait for next year! It was really cool when the team would get together and pray before each game. Just a year before that, all the girls hated each other and were very unhappy with themselves. I have personally seen a big change in their attitudes and their speech as well. I really give God all the glory for allowing me to witness to them. As for my other sports, God always comes first. Most of the girls on my soccer and cheerleading squad are already Christians, but I know some of them still struggle and with God’s power, I intend to help them.”

During the winter, Rebecca also plays soccer and goes snowboarding. “I sort of stink at soccer because I get called on so many handballs. I guess I think it’s basketball.” Conversely Rebecca thoroughly enjoys snowboarding and even competes in it from time to time. “I love doing sick tricks and catching major air.” She used to also play lacrosse but gave that up. During the summer, she currently plays soccer and cheerleads; then in the fall she primarily focuses on soccer and basketball.
