Published: Thu, 01 Jun 2006 09:09:47 -0400

The Man from Snowy River is the story of a young man, Jim Craig, and his change from boyhood, to manhood. After his father dies, Jim is told that he must leave the mountains and go to the valley and work until he can prove that he is a man, and can live in the mountains. Upon his arrival in the valley, he applies for a job at a ranch owned by the rich Mr. Harrison. When Jim meets Mr. Harrison, he notices that he has a great resemblance to his good friend, Spur. Jim thinks that there may be more to Harrison than meets the eye, and is determined to find out his secret.

Soon after starting his job, he meets Harrison’s fiercely independent daughter, Jessica. Jessica had been raised by her aunt, and had picked up on her woman’s rights opinions. Throughout the whole movie, Jessica pushes her right to ride and work like a man. Jim doesn’t have it easy when he starts his new job. All the other ranch hands call him “Mountain boy” and make fun of him endlessly. But eventually, they realize that Jim has more talent than them with horses, and is better at his job than they are. When Mr. Harrison leaves to make his annual round-up of his cattle, Jim and Jessica decide to break in Harrison’s prize colt. During the ten days, Jim and Jessica become closer, and eventually fall in love. When Mr. Harrison returns and finds out that Jim had broken in his colt, he is ready to promptly fire him until he finds out that Jim is back in the mountains rounding up his stray cattle. During Jim’s absence, Mr. Harrison and Jessica get in a fight, and Jessica runs away. She meets up with Jim, and he fores her to go back to the ranch, even though she insists she must run away. Back at the ranch, Jim still must prove that he is a man, not only to get his land back, but to also prove to Harrison that he is able to take care of his daughter.

The movie is filmed on location in the beautiful mountains of Australia. All the scenery is beautiful, and you get to see both the rugged and the gentle side of the mountains. The music is written by Bruce Rowland, and it is spectacular! There are beautiful piano pieces, and also wonderful orchestral pieces.

While the movie is not the best made movie ever, and doesn’t have the best acting, it is still a wonderful family movie.
