What Hearts, written by Bruce Brooks in 1992, follows the story of Asa, a young boy who goes through tremendous pain and heartache.
The book is divided into four segments, each with its own separate title. Within those segments, are chapters. The segments are entitled "As If," "Not Blue," "Out," and "What Hearts?" Each one depicts a different time in Asa's life, beginning with first grade in "As If" and ending with seventh grade in "What Hearts?"
At the start of What Hearts, Asa comes home, incredibly excited after his last day of school, only to find out that his parents are getting a divorce and he is moving--immediately. What's worse is he finds out that his mother is getting married to another man, a man named Dave, and a man that Asa does not like. The other segments in the story really have nothing to do with each other at all, except for the one thing they have in common--Asa. Throughout the different segments Asa goes through many hardships and experiences what many children face--moving, making new friends, playing sports, and of course, falling in love.
Since it's publication in 1992 What Hearts has won numerous awards including the Newberry Honor Award, and is an ALA Notable Book, an ALA Best Book for Young Adults and is on The Horn Book Fanfare Honor List.
Although a sad book, What Hearts is excellently written and enjoyable to read.
