English 9Published: Mon, 01 May 2006 09:00:00 -0400 English 9 has given students a bright inspiration for writing! The students have experienced a tiny bit of the writers world and the publishing aspects of writing. The English 9 teacher, Ms. Gaines, has helped the class to review grammar so that readers could understand the written work. Reading literature and poetry have guided the English 9 students in distinguising the beliefs and authors worldviews expressed. Students have also learned the importance of tactful communication and how words affect daily lives. The class reviewed the vital parts of grammar and how it assists to convey clear communication. Students went through the parts of speech by diagramming, which helped the class to organize sentences. Self-checking the grammar enabled the class to notice the punctuation, speech flow, and think about what was meant in what they wrote. It seemed tough for some students, but Ms. Gaines reminded the class about the importance for the readers to understand what was being communicated. Literature has been the amusing part of our class; the class read from different authors and explored their style of writing. Ms. Gaines taught the class what questions to ask in order to discover the plot of the stories we read. The novels we read included: King Arthur and His Knights of the Round Table, a fantasy; Hinds Feet on High Places, an allegory; Harriet Tubman, a biography; and Much Ado About Nothing, a Shakespearian play. Everyone had a personal part or character in each genre to read. In poetry, students read different authors and talked about the significance of what was written. Ms. Gaines helped the class to see the "words behind the lines" through poetry analysis. This analysis of English literature broadened students critical thinking and also developed the skills needed to analyze the spiritual side of written works. In everything the class read in English 9, Ms. Gaines challenged the class to find the spiritual significance. Every week the class was given a new Bible verse that expresses the principles of effective communication and the consequences that come when using speech incorrectly. Throughout the semester, Ms.Gaines has lead the class in perfecting their writing, and taught that as the students talents continue to grow, they can serve God in speech and written words.
