English 8, section 5

Salutations, fellow TPSers!!!!

This month has been a very busy four weeks;English 8 section five students have been feverishly working on poet biographies, class presentations, and on top of all of that, the poetry portfolios! In addition, our section cringes in terror as we prepare to take what Mrs. Ives calls a poetry “quiz,”but which is better labeled an in depth diagnostic examination. So far, though, everyone has been great and doing extremely well in all aspects of the quarter, so the “quiz” should be a breeze!

Everybody had fun (or at least tried to have fun) selecting a poet for their biographies and later to use in their presentations. Some of the poets chosen were Nash, Longfellow, Frost, and Browning. The biographers, after finishing their papers, then swallowed their fear and read their poetry presentations in class. All presentations went very well.

For portfolios, we have finally finished composing our 20 original poems! Although not everyone found poetry writing fun, many of section five’s participants have really enjoyed this opportunity and have brought forth some really amazing work. Other poetry items we’ve studied just recently include epics, elegies, polishing poems, and much more. Now our class is eagerly awaiting to begin our Animal Farm study which will finish up the year. It’s a been a very deep and challenging study thus far, but a great month. Many thanks to Mrs. Ives, as well!

Have a happy spring break (and spring in general)!

The Class Quoter: (See what everyone else thought of poetry!)

JacobD: My favorite part of the poetry study was the end! I like limericks best.

GinaK: I really liked writing poems. I can understand professional poetry better now. I like free verse because I have more options for diction without having to make it rhyme.

SummerS: I liked writing poetry! I like writing trintinas.

JordanS: I think I have created a better respect for poets and why they write it.

Anna-MariaR:  I think poetry is complicated, but it’s a lovely thing. I liked the challenge to write my own poems.

DrewM: I do not like poetry, but I’m praising God that it’s over!

PatrickM2: Um…I…well…just writing it…I guess…was fun…

HollyH: I loved writing all the poems for the poetry portfolio! I love to write poetry, and this gave me a chance to try some new stuff! I like couplets.  Couplets are easy to write, so I like them.

KellyN: I like couplets, and odes and quatrains.

ClaireC: I love to write poems! I learned to write different styles of poetry. I have a newly cultivated love for poetry!

CaraBethA: As stupid as it sounds, I thought that poetry was for old people, but I have gradually gotten to like it a lot better and my favorite part was doing the haikus.
