English 8, section 5Published: Wed, 01 Mar 2006 07:27:47 -0500 Here in English 8 (section 5) we are in the middle of our massive poetry study. While our wonderful, in-depth study has not been greeted with as much enthusiasm as some other subjects we have covered, on the whole everyone is finding poetry to be a little less scary than at first thought! To start out poetry, our section went over the very basics of what poetry is and read some classic poems, along with discussions on favorite parts why we liked them. Mrs. Ives helped to "tap our senses" and give our poems a first-person voice to make them better written. Soon after, we dived right into the poetry writing! So far, English 8 students have enjoyed (or simply just lived through) writing couplets, free verse, cinquains, haikus, sestinas, limericks and many more! Although learning about rhythms, scansion, and meters has been a little confusing, overall things have been going better than anyone expected. Our section also waits with eager anticipation and at the same time mortal dread of upcoming poetry presentations. Although everyone has already completed a poet biography paper, we now prepare for a presentation on both the poets in our bios, as well as some selected pieces of poetry to discuss for class--with our microphones! Mrs. Ives' class looks forward to studying a few more poetry styles such as epics, elegies and picture poems, as well as the Animal Farm literature study which is coming up in the near future. So far, class has been a great success, and Mrs. Ives is doing a wonderful job (as usual)! The Class Quoter: ClaireC: "I have really enjoyed the English 8 poetry study so far. Because of our study, I have discovered that writing poetry is exciting!! I like writing all of the poetry styles, but my favorite would have to be the quatrain. It is simple enough, and there is room for creativity." LibbyR: "I never really enjoyed reading or writing poetry all that much till I studied it here with Mrs. Ives! Learning poetry has really helped me to appreciate all types of poetry and really enjoy writing them! My favorite poetry styles are the sestina and couplets. I love the rhyme and rhythm of couplets, and the challenge the sestina gives to the writer." RebeccaA: "The poetry study, to me, has been the hardest study yet, but some kinds of poetry are fun to write. So far my favorite forms of poetry are the cinquain and the couplet."
