When I Grow Up...

Ever wondered what your fellow TPSers wanted to be when they grew up? Well, here is a look at a few of your fellow classmates and their childhood dreams.

When I was little I spent a lot of time with this girl, Sara, who lived next door to me. My mom hated Britney Spears, so whenever I wanted to listen to her, I'd have to go to Sara's house. We would have Britney Spears karaoke . . . so that's what I wanted to be when I grew up: a pop singer. Then I learned better. And now I hate Britney Spears and pop.

As a little girl, I dreamed of being a zookeeper. I remember reading books about fierce lions and vicious bears; I wanted to tame these wild beasts. I looked at pictures of the pink flamingos, how graceful and sweet they were. The power and strength of the blue rhinoceros gave me hope and a certain excitement for life. Somehow, all the creatures of the zoo touched my heart in different ways. I am now much older and pursuing a different career, but I will always love the sound of the mocking bird and the hug of the koala.

When I was a kid, I wanted to be a submarine engineer and admiral.  I had plans of designing, building, and launching a jet-powered submarine and completing it by age 15.  I had everything: drawings, plans, and even a non-working control panel put together in the garage using a piece of wood and old electrical switches and dials. The sub was also going to have laser weapons, and had supersonic capability under water.  (Oh yeah, I dreamed big.)  However, now that I’m 18, I can see that didn't end up happening.

When I was a little girl, I wanted to be Christopher Robin. I wanted to live in the Hundred Acre Wood. Instead of doing school and chores, I would catch heffalumps, eat from Rabbit's garden, and keep Piglet company. But best of all, I would get to chill with Pooh Bear and Tigger.  I liked Pooh because he was everyone's favorite, and it didn't matter when he did dumb things like eat too much and get stung by bees. Tigger was so happy all the time and loved to bounce! Of course, what I want to do has changed a little bit by now, (and Christopher Robin happens to be a male…) but it still sounds like a great life.

I wasn’t too creative when I was little.  Primarily I dreamed of becoming an astronaut or a fighter pilot. Thankfully, I didn’t yet understand that life doesn’t end up becoming ideal. My love for flight fueled my aspirations to become a fighter pilot or an astronaut. Everything beyond the tops of the trees fascinated me (and still does). I would always think how cool it would be to have the power to soar beyond what I could see and to the wide-open blue spaces. Sometimes I wish I could revert to that simple understanding of life. There was something I wanted (to go beyond what I could see), and the obvious (and easy, I thought) solution was to become an astronaut or a fighter pilot and move into a whole new realm of existence.
