Some Hearts

Published: Wed, 01 Feb 2006 09:00:00 -0500

Rising star Carrie Underwood began her singing career only months ago after winning the 2005 season of American Idol. Her debut album, Some Hearts, was released on Arista Records on November 15, 2005. In the few months since then, Some Hearts has reached double platinum status and her first single, “Jesus, Take the Wheel,” has topped the charts.

Some Hearts begins with the track entitled “Wasted,” which despite the sound, differs from much country music in that it is not about getting drunk. Rather, it is a vivid, memorable track: a very solid track to start the album off with. The album continues with “Don’t Forget to Remember Me,” a song about growing up and moving on, and the title track, which is one of the more upbeat tracks on the album.

Another track that stands out is “Starts with Goodbye,” which is also about changing, moving on. “I Just Can’t Live A Lie,” “Lessons Learned,” also shine. In “I Ain’t In Checotah Anymore,” Carries reminisces about life before she stepped into the spotlight.

Carrie’s first single, “Jesus, Take the Wheel,” is undoubtedly one of the most touching tracks on the album. No doubt you’ve heard it, scanning through the radio stations. “Jesus, take the wheel, take it from my hands,” Carrie sings, “I can’t do this on my own.”  This song tells the story of a young woman, stressed, tired, and sick of the course her life is taking, as Carrie puts it “she was running low, on faith and gasoline…” She wrecks, and as her car spins on the asphalt she cries out to God, asking Jesus to take the wheel in her life. While this song definitely points towards driving, it also talks about the other areas of our lives where we need Jesus to take the wheel: the times where we have just had enough and need to let go and let God take the wheels to our life.

She was driving last Friday on her way to Cincinnati
On a snowy white Christmas Eve
Goin' home to see her Mama & her Daddy
with the baby in the backseat
Fifty miles to go and she was running low on faith and gasoline
It'd been a long hard year

She had a lot on her mind and she didn't pay attention
She was going way to fast
Before she knew it she was spinning on a thin black sheet of glass
She saw both their lives flash before her eyes
She didn't even have time to cry
She was so scared
She threw her hands up in the air

Jesus, take the wheel
Take it from my hands
Cause I can't do this on my own
I'm letting go
So give me one more chance
Save me from this road I'm on
Jesus, take the wheel

It was still getting colder
when she made it to the shoulder
And the car came to a stop
She cried when she saw
that baby in the backseat sleeping like a rock
And for the first time in a long time
She bowed her head to pray
She said I'm sorry for the way
I've been living my life
I know I've got to change
So for now on tonight

Jesus, take the wheel
Take it from my hands
Cause I can't do this on my own
I'm letting go
So give me one more chance
Save me from this road I'm on
Oh, Jesus, take the wheel

Oh, I'm letting go
So give me one more chance
Save me from this road I'm on
From this road I'm on
Jesus, take the wheel
