English 8, section 5

Greetings fellow TPS’ers!! This is Libby reporting for Mrs. Ives' Friday class! This past month we’ve been keeping quite busy! After finishing up our Anne of Green Gables study (or "AOGG study," as we say in class), section five participants have been fervently reading The Miracle Worker play (by William Gibson) and completing companion study guides. Other homework assignments have included personal choice fiction pieces, cause/effect essays (based on AOGG events), definition essays, and our upcoming poetry study.

Although AOGG wasn’t considered the favorite book among some of the students, the study went extremely well; the cause/effect papers had many catchy themes, including, The Causes of Anne Attempting To Walk the Ridgepole, and The Effects Anne had on Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert.  The Miracle Worker study was met with much more anticipation than AOGG (see quote by Patrick below), and English 8 enjoyed a few “digging deeper” discussions about symbolism and character traits. Our class went all out in the fiction assignment. Everyone came up with fantastic stories like a memorable mermaid fantasy story by GinaK, and a thrilling science fiction account by PatrickM2. Everyone has rather mixed thoughts on the upcoming poetry study, but all in all, everyone is enjoying it so far.

Recently in grammar, our section has had a couple vocabulary tests with words from out AOGG study. Some of our assignments among others include adverbs and conjunction studies.

Over all, our class has gone wonderfully, thus far! Although Mrs. Ives had some internet trouble one class, everyone has been great; the lessons have gone smoothly, and there’s been tons of good discussion. Mrs. Ives has done a stupendous job!
