Ever since her debut album Wide Eyed (1998) Nichole Nordeman has consistently produced music that refreshes and inspires. Her third album, Woven & Spun (2002), does just that. With Woven & Spun Nichole moves beyond the topics of her previous albums--searching to understand God and His mysteries--to God’s abundant goodness.

Nichole, who wrote all but one song on the album, doesn’t sugarcoat her lyrics as so many Christian artists seem to. She explores the pain of change and struggles to accept her own imperfections in tracks like “I Am” and “Even Then.” However, she does not cease to recognize God’s mercy in view of her own humanity.

Musically, the album has its strong tracks and its relatively bland tracks. Lyrically, it couldn’t be better. Nichole’s real, honest lyrics set her apart from her peers. Woven & Spun is more of a worship album than any of Nichole’s earlier releases. It constantly points the listener to God’s grace and goodness. Nichole is able to draw the listener in because she knows how to write from life.

Tracks that stand out:

  • “Holy,” a strong, upbeat song which reminds us to constantly be on our knees before our Maker.
  • “I Am,” a beautiful representation of how our perception of God changes as we grow and is quite honestly the most touching track of the album.
  • “Doxology,” which highlights Nichole’s rich, beautiful voice.
  • “Legacy,” an upbeat track about storing up treasures in heaven
  • “Mercies New,” which reminds us of God’s never-ending mercies.

The album’s final track, a soft piano ballad entitled “Gratitude,” brings the entire album together with these lyrics:

“We'll give thanks to You with gratitude

For lessons learned in how to trust in You

That we are blessed beyond what we could ever dream

In abundance or in need…”
