Opinion Piece - Pro New Year's ResolutionsPublished: Sun, 01 Jan 2006 09:00:00 -0500 Many people from all around America are thinking of something to promise themselves come January 1st--losing weight, being "nicer," showing more affection, reading their Bible more. Why do people make New Year's resolutions in the first place? New Year's resolutions come in many shapes and sizes, but if properly used, they are one good way to glorify God. Audrey Hay (AudreyH), a freshman this year at The Potter's School, said , "If you make a resolution to read your Bible more, then that's God-glorifying. If you make a resolution to watch more movies or something, that's not really God-glorifying." For Christians, New Year's resolutions are a great way to focus on improving themselves. Promising to do devotions more frequently, pray more fervently, attend church more regularly, and other things of that nature are definitely great goals to have. The vast majority of people in America making their New Year's resolutions are focusing on other things, as well. Hilary Roush, a former TPSer, said, "I've got several goals this year. I want to keep up my relationship with God as well as lose weight and manage my money better." Goals like that are good -- for that matter, anything which focuses on the glory of God is good. Even deciding to eat fewer potatoes in the coming year is good if the reason for doing that would be to glorify God! When Christians spend their time working for God, their goals are wonderful. "They're not something you should march into without prayer and consideration of what God would have you do," says Caleb Dolen, a friend I used to go to church with. The most important part about making New Year's resolutions is making sure that they are glorifying to God in all aspects.
