HS GeographyPublished: Sun, 01 Jan 2006 09:00:00 -0500 More projects, worksheets, and an upcoming Christmas break. Thats the summary of this month. People have finished sharing their Travel Log projects, and everyone did a great job! I went to more places sitting on the computer then Ive gone moving around. The next project, Home Front, is due February 9th and people are starting to think about that--I know I am! It involves going around and recording the physical geography of your hometown, and the social geography: the races, religions, and hobbies of the people that live there. It lets you know your hometown a little bit better.
The homework for the past month has also been interesting and full of facts. Mr. Carter is a very competent teacher with lots of geography and history knowledge to share with the rest of us in class and on the worksheets. This month we have been finishing up the United States, and moving on to Canada and Latin America. I thought Canada was the best since I didnt know much about it. The USA has the biggest trade with Canada then any other nation, and we have been at peace with them for over 150 years. From what Ive read, the physical landscape there sounds beautiful, with lots of mountains and forests. L. M. Montgomery had the right idea when she picked this place to write Anne of Green Gables. Most Canadians are French and are bilingual so that would be a good place to study that language. Although they speak French a lot, they also speak English fluently!
The other places we studied this month were Latin America (including Mexico), Central America, and the West Indies. Middle America was once home to thousands of Indians, Aztecs, and other tribes, and you can still visit their ruins today. Mexico is also strongly Roman Catholic, hosting the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Except for the Vatican, it is the most visited Roman Catholic site in the world. Unfortunately, the government is badly unstable in Mexico, since bloody revolutions and many coups (the illegal overthrow of government) have shaped the nation. Mexico used to be under Spain, but gained its independence in 1821. America has greatly influenced Mexico because they share a two-thousand-mile-long border and trade many goods. In addition, there are many other astounding things about Middle America, too many for me to share in this report.
Christmas is now coming upon us again, with all of us cheering the rest it brings. Class is fun, but who doesnt love a break from school? Sadly though, it seems like breaks, presents, and Santa Claus becomes the real meaning of the holidays. People get more excited about a man in a red suit than for the Reason for the Season. Stores are banning the use of Merry Christmas in their stores and advertisements, substituting Happy Holidays and Seasons Greetings. America seems determined to push God out of its country. Jesus came down to earth as a baby to die for our sins and screw-ups, and thats the real meaning of Christmas. Say it with me--Christ-mas. Try to do something special for others this year then worrying about what gifts youre getting. To close out, I wish you a very Merry Christmas with friends and family, and a Happy New Year!
