Bible - Christmas

Published: Thu, 01 Dec 2005 09:00:00 -0500

For me, one of the most exciting things about the Bible is seeing how God’s plan is interwoven throughout the whole of His Word. The more I read the Bible, the more evidence I see of God’s love and providence from the beginning of time, and the way that love continues even now. Starting back in Genesis and continuing through the Old Testament, God’s plan to send His own Son to redeem the world is prophesied again and again. In the New Testament, we see the amazing fulfillment of these promises, beginning with the birth of the Saviour.

Isaiah 9:6: For unto us a Child is born,
                 Unto us a Son is given;
And the government will be upon His shoulder.
And His name will be called
                 Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. (NKJV)

 Fulfilled:

  • For unto us a Child is born:

"For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord."
    Luke 2:11 (NKJV)

    • Unto us a Son is given:

"For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life."
    John 3:16 (NKJV)

    • And the government will be upon His shoulder:

"And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth."
    Matthew 28:18 (NKJV)

Isaiah 7:14: Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel. (NKJV)

    Fulfilled:

    • Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son:

"Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: After His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Spirit."
    Matthew 1:18 (NKJV)

"But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit."
    Matthew 1:20 (NKJV)

    • And shall call his name Immanuel:
"All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: 'The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel'—which means, 'God with us.'"
    Matthew 1:22-23 (NKJV)

    Micah 5:2:
    But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah,
Though you are little among the thousands of Judah,
Yet out of you shall come forth to Me
The One to be Ruler in Israel,
Whose goings forth are from of old,
                   From everlasting.

    Fulfilled:

    • But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of you shall come forth to Me the One to be Ruler in Israel:

"So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son."
    Luke 2:4-7a (NKJV)

"When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, "Let's go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about."
    Luke 2:15 (NKJV)
