THE COLD AND FROSTY NIGHT

By

Kerr N. Will

He galloped through the frosty night

Snow bit at his feet and toes

He could hear the mournful hoot of owls

He smell cheery fires with his nose

But he knew his house was far away

The snow came down even faster now

He felt frozen all the way through

Then he remembered his plow

He had left it sitting out as he left the house

He galloped on even faster than ever

He saw a house with fire a-crackling

But he would not stop till his house never!

He heard a horse coming up behind him

He looked around and looking grim

Was a highwayman coming after him

In one hand he held a pistol and the other a limb

He jumped off his horse lay flat in the snow

The highwayman galloped past out of sight

He jumped up and against the dim moonlight

Saw the receding figure that gave him such a fright

Now he was almost there as he ran through the night

Inside his house he ran panting for breath

Before he could reach his children and wife

He sank to the floor and forever more layeth
