Pride and Prejudice

Of all the many books I have read in the past, one I dearly love and am particularly thankful for is Pride & Prejudice written by Jane Austen.

Pride & Prejudice is a classic novel, written by Jane Austen in the late 1700's.  Since it's publication in 1813, Pride & Prejudice remains a favorite among thousands of girls around the globe, and is by far her most popular novel.  It follows the story of the Bennet family, who although are not a well-to-do family, they are certainly not poor either.  Elizabeth Bennet, the main character of the story, is the second of five girls in a family, with no boys.  As a result, at the time of Mr. Bennet's death, no daughter shall inherit the estate.

The story follows Elizabeth and her relationship with a rather rich and proud gentleman by the name of Mr. Darcy.  The two have several meetings and squabbles throughout the novel.  As well, Austen follows the story of Elizabeth’s older sister, Jane and her developing romance with another rich man, a friend of Mr. Darcy’s, by the name of Mr. Bingley.  Several events throughout the book threaten to hinder and even stomp out the budding romance between the two, while their friends, Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy, seem to grow to dislike each other each time they see them.

As the plot unfolds, Austen uses a diverse vocabulary and excellent writing technique to draw the reader in and fall in love with the diverse and deep characters that she creates.  Although a bit slow at first, as with any book, Austen still manages to catch the reader’s attention and hold it for the remainder of the story.  She writes a style all her own and incorporates old English vocabulary and detailed scenic passages, captivating her reader through the whole story.

Austen’s books take time and effort to read and understand due to the length and complexity of each novel, but they are definitely worth the time.  All of her books which I have read, particularly Pride & Prejudice none has been a waste of time.

My Rating: 10/10
