Book Review – Relient K with Mark Nicholas, The Complex Infrastructure Known as the Female MindPublished: Fri, 03 Jun 2005 12:17:22 -0400 “We all know the girls that I am talking about. Well they are time bombs, and they are ticking, and the only question’s when they’ll blow up. And they’ll blow up, we know that without a doubt, ‘cause they’re those girls, yeah, you know those girls that let their emotions get the best of them.” This is the first verse to the song Mood Rings, on the hit punk-influenced rock band RelientK’s third CD, Two Lefts Don’t Make a Right…But Three Do. The song Mood Rings is about nothing other than--you guessed it--emotional girls. It talks about how the author has come up with a plan to get all emotional girls to wear mood rings, so that guys can know what they’re thinking. However, many emotional girls--myself included--love the song. At the end of this song it says “Mood ring, oh mood ring, oh tell me, will you bring the key to unlock this mystery of girls and their emotions? Play it back in slow motion so I may understand the complex infrastructure known as the female mind.” From there has come a new book--written by Relient K, with the help of Mark Nicholas--titled The Complex Infrastructure Known as the Female Mind.
“This is a book about girls, for girls—written by some boys.” So begins the back of the book. Inside the table of contents, there are some interesting, but very recognizable, titles. Every chapter, or portion, of the book is named after one of their songs--with the exception of one, named Time Bombs (but we all know where that came from). There are five different parts to this book. Kick Off: Introduction, Nancy Drew and Girls Like You: Girl Types, I Am Understood?: Boy Types, When You’re Around: Relationships, and Getting Into You: Conclusion.
In this “RelientK exposé,” the group attempts to dive into the world of the female mind and discover just what it is that makes girls tick. They divide females into twelve different categories, but do not fail to mention the rarity of finding one girl “all one type.” The book continues on by examining each type of girl in depth. At the end of each chapter, it even gives clues as to whether or not you (as a girl) may be this type. Following their examination of the twelve different girl types, we get into boy types. There are two of them, respectively--Mr. Wonderful and The Ape. Although this section is rather short, it is still both entertaining and amusing--and even provides females with an instruction guide to deal with a guy. Finally we get to relationships, and both female to female and male to female relationships are examined. The end is rather short, but wraps up the book just the right way. All in all, this book is both informative, fun, and still has that “RelientK touch.”
I encourage every female to read this book, no matter how well you think you fit in or how badly you think you fit in--no matter who you are, no matter what your age. I also encourage males to read this book. “But this is a book for girls, right?” Right, but it also says in the introduction: “If you are a guy and happen to be reading this book, then good for you.” So, really, I encourage everyone to read it. I think it will help many guy-and-girl relationships, even if we still don’t fully understand each. However, we also have to realize… we never will!
