Aviation Science--SilasRPublished: Thu, 02 Jun 2005 11:04:00 -0400 The official class title: Aviation Science The EST time and day class meets: 11:30 AM, Monday Your name: SilasR The teacher’s full name: Dwain Wheeler The teacher’s e-mail address and bio (found on this page): http://www.pottersschool.org/tps2005/teachers.htm
Have you ever wondered what keeps all the hundreds of airplanes that fly around from dropping on our heads? How do they go so fast? And how do the pilots know when and how much to turn? Mr. Wheeler’s Aviation Science class answers all of these questions. When someone mentions an airplane, most people generally think of a huge metal bird and don’t really think about what keeps it up there. However, later in their lives they think, “What keeps those huge birds up there?” They eventually formulate a couple reasons, but a lot of the time they find themselves wrong. I went through about five reasons before I became stumped. The real reason surprised me. Have you ever wondered why all airplanes are shaped something like an arrow? Many people have probably already guessed; the shape contributes to speed. Mr. Wheeler teaches us about these concepts and instruments used for navigation so well, that we surprise him when we ask few questions. When he gave us a project, we got to choose anything we wanted, as long as it had to do with aviation and we did more than just tossing a paper airplane across the room. Mr. Wheeler can answer all the questions you have ever had about aviation. Then he can go on and tell you more! He tells us stuff we never even thought about, and the things he talks about never bore us--unless you don’t like aviation in the first place. The pictures he provides are very interesting as well. He gives us just the right amount of tests; not too often, which would stress the student out, but often enough so that the students don’t have trouble studying and so that they can still recover if they don’t do well on one. All of the above makes the class fun, educating, and not-too-hard. That’s probably the first time I’ve seen all of those qualities in one class before! It’s not just a “semi-educating” class either; we actually learn a whole lot!
